Top 5 Steps to Healing your Skin + My Skincare Routine

Achieving a clear and acne-free complexion can be a really overwhelming and frustrating process. There are several factors that influence the health of our skin like what we eat, our exercise routine, and how we process emotions (yes, our mental health can also impact our skin).
Since our bodies are so incredibly different, a certain routine can work for someone while it might not work for you. So, when you suffer from chronic acne and nothing seems to work (even the stuff that's seems to help EVERYBODY but you), it's really hard to feel hopeful. I mean, all you want is to feel confident and like you can walk out the door without make-up on. Not too much to ask for.
Trust me, I know the feeling. I suffered from painful acne for years that made me feel awful about myself and I would avoid the camera at all cost. Now, after implementing the following tips and changing to a plant-based diet, my skin has improved significantly and I hope they can help you!
1. Add the rainbow to your plate
When we eat fruits and vegetables in a wide range of colors, we get more nutrients, minerals, and vitamins into our system. The darker the color, the higher concentration of these substances to help boost our body’s ability to improve collagen production (helps keep a youthful complexion), remove toxins from our system, and feed our cells with powerful phytonutrients to make us feel and look healthy.
Try adding spinach, kale, dandelion tea (great for detoxifying the liver), broccoli, yellow/green/red peppers, purple cabbage, tomatoes (can help fight sun damage since it has a high concentration of the antioxidant lycopene), and avocados (health fat) to your meals and see how your skin improves.
2. More water in the morning
Increasing your water intake is the quickest and easiest way to flush out your system. It keeps your skin hydrated, which will decrease the look of wrinkles and improve a dull complexion. I have also found that my cravings for sugary treats has decreased significantly after drinking more water.
Water can be super boring so I add lemon, lime, mint leaves, or cucumber to make me feel like I am drinking fancy spa water. Drinking warm lemon water in the morning will also help your system start up after a night's rest and get your digestion going (a great tip that help my constipation).
If you are like me and forget to drink water during the day, I suggest setting alarms on your phone to remind you to hydrate yo’ self!
3. Herbal power
Have you heard of maca before? Well this stuff is pure magic! Originally from Peru, this root has been used for centuries as a powerful source of energy, strength, improving fertility/libido, and balancing hormones. As women, our hormones are easily unbalanced and, if this happens, we are more likely to breakout. By using herbs like maca, you can help your body balance out your hormones to improve your skin's health.
I have been taking Maca for several months now I have seen a huge improvement, especially with my breakouts surrounding my jawbone (this location is connected to hormone imbalance). I take one of these a day and it’s been a huge help at regulating my hormones. As a bonus, it has also been helping significantly reduce my PMS symptoms and boosting my energy!
4. Move your booty
We all know that exercise is highly beneficial to keep our bodies and minds health but it can also help your skin. Exercise helps remove toxins from your body via your sweat glands (detoxes your lymphatic system), increases your happy hormones (dopamine, estrogen and serotonin), while decreases stress (cortisol) and anxiety. Stress increases inflammation, which can make your skin appear puffy, cause breakouts, and reduce the blood flow to you complexion. So go move your body in a way that you enjoy! Go for a nice evening walk, practice yoga (at home or in a studio), take a new spin class, or dance around your living room. Your skin will thank you.
5. Keep your paws off your skin
This was a habit I had to fight to overcome! I would constantly pick and touch my skin which meant that the bacteria from my hands was getting onto my skin. Eww! We use our hands for so much that we forget how many different surfaces we touch throughout the day. So, in order to keep your skin clear minimize the amount you touch your skin.
Bonus tip: Change your pillow case 2 times a week because when we sleep we sweat and leave behind a lot of oily residue. By changing it more often your skin will have a cleaner surface to rest upon. Time to get your beauty sleep!
